چکیده

A comparison is made of the traditional Loschmidt (reversibility) and Zermelo (recurrence) objections to Boltzmann’s H-theorem, and its simplified variant in the Ehrenfests’ 1912 wind-tree model. The little-cited 1896 (pre-recurrence) objection of Zermelo (similar to an 1889 argument due to Poincaré) is also analysed. Significant differences between the objections are highlighted, and several old and modern misconceptions concerning both them and the H-theorem are clarified. We give particular emphasis to the radical nature of Poincaré’s and Zermelo’s attack, and the importance of the shift in Boltzmann’s thinking in response to the objections as a whole.

Boltzmann’s H-theorem, its discontents, and the birth of statistical mechanics

A comparison is made of the traditional Loschmidt (reversibility) and Zermelo (recurrence) objections to Boltzmann’s H-theorem, and its simplified variant in the Ehrenfests’ 1912 wind-tree model. The littlecited 1896 (measure-theoretic) objection of Zermelo (similar to an 1889 argument due to Poincaré) is Boltzmann’s thinking in response to the objections taken together. & 2009 Published by Els...

I say that if that proof [of the H-theorem] does not somewhere or other introduce some assumptions about averages, probability, or irreversibility, it cannot be valid. Culverwell (1894b) So there is a general tendency for H to diminish, although it may conceivably increase in particular cases. Just as in matters political, change for the better is possible, but the tendency is for all change to...

Statistical mechanics and the duality of quantum mechanical time evolution

Through the H theorem, Bolzmann attempted to validate the foundations of statistical mechanics. However, it is incompatible with the fundamental laws of mechanics because its deduction requires the introduction of probability. In this paper we attempt a justification of statistical mechanics without deviating from the existing framework of quantum mechanics. We point out that the principle of e...

Rethinking Boltzmannian Equilibrium

Boltzmannian statistical mechanics partitions the phase space into macroregions, and the largest of these is identified with equilibrium. What justifies this identification? Common answers focus on Boltzmann’s combinatorial argument, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, and maximum entropy considerations. We argue that they fail and present a new answer. We characterise equilibrium as the macros...

Boltzmann’s Approach to Statistical Mechanics

In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Ludwig Boltzmann explained how irreversible macroscopic laws, in particular the second law of thermodynamics, originate in the time-reversible laws of microscopic physics. Boltzmann’s analysis, the essence of which I shall review here, is basically correct. The most famous criticisms of Boltzmann’s later work on the subject have little merit. Most ...
